Episode 140 – With Great Power
00:00:00 – LeMans is a race that takes 24 hours. It’s a Motorsport thing, which comes dangerously close to SPORTZ. So the Paleopals call in reinforcements in the form of Joe Batwinis. Why attempt to recreate Car Talk at all? Because the race was won by a diesel hybrid, and that’s quite interesting.
00:21:07 – Drinks are also of interest, at least to the presenters of the show. So here’s what they were having. Jacob was loving his saison from Smuttynose. Patrick is perplexed by his Harpoon IPA. Joe comes close to receiving Southern wrath with his mispronunciation of the popular Dixie soda Cheerwine. And finally Ryan goes pre-purity law with a 13th Century Grut Bier.
00:29:10 – This week on Trailer Trash Talk the Paleopals abandon Ryan in their overall dismissal of the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man.
00:47:54 – The guys may not know how to pronounce Chauvet, but they do know it’s home to some old paintings, but just how old? And done by whom? Patrick and Ryan explain how we date the difficult, and whether or not neanderthals are to blame for the pieces. It’s all part of science’s new obsession with old pigments!
01:01:07 – PaleoPOWs are a lot like cave paintings, no one knows exactly how they started. This week: all foreign edition! Patrick gets a recurring yen donation from Curt S. who likes to wear his Science… sort of shirt while visiting foreign breweries. EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT SENTENCE IS BEYOND AWESOME! Thanks, Curt! Jacob has a question from Karl M. about bad science in movies and how that makes us feel. Ryan first makes up for not mentioning the new podcast Generation Anthropocene but ends with a “simple” question about dinosaurs from Luke J., the answer to which manages to confound and anger poor Jacob.

Great show this week. I thought I’d weigh in on a few things: Cheerwine is actually from Salisbury, NC. The site of a huge infamous Civil War prison camp, Cheerwine is the only other thing it’s known for. I used to live there, and I know at least one other Science…sort of fan that calls it home. A nice small Southern town all in all, it’s about 40 miles north of Charlotte. Cheerwine is beloved by the locals, but I’ve never been a big fan. It’s sort of like carbonated cherry cough syrup, but has a tendency to go flat somewhere between the second or third sip, which results in a person drinking about 11 ounces of cherry cough syrup without the psychotropic reward of drinking 11 ounces of actual cough syrup.
There is one way I know of to make money on HSX. The method I used to win one quarter (thanks for the mug!), and lead another. Take the market trope of “Buy low, sell high” to its logical extreme. Use a few million H$ to buy up 100,000 shares of every crap stock below .20 H$, and then wait. Every week or two one will start production or get some news, and shoot up to 1000% its original worth. Sell, repeat. This way, you can only lose a few thousand bucks on any given stock, but the massive rewards from the few that go to release more than make up for the slight losses of those that fizzle out as penny-stocks. The downside is that while it’s effective, it’s pretty boring. I lost interest, and now the growth is pretty slow. I’ve been hovering around H$20 million for the last few months.
Anywho, cheers on a good show. Love European racing and arts/crafts by dead people (or people-like folks) Certainly more entertaining than a long comment about Salisbury, NC and fake economics…keep it up!
