Episode 142 – Running from the Truth
00:00:00 – Lousiana wants to implement vouchers to send kids to private schools. Problem is some of these schools teach Creationsist science and math. And it seems the Loch Ness Monster is their ace in the hole to disprove evolution. So there’s that…
00:25:07 – Drinks dull the pain of bad science. Ryan has a merlot with a marshmallow. It’s a think he’s been meaning to try. And Kelly kicks back a Cabernet Sauvignon, which apparently is an old favorite for her. Who knew? Jacob has a Bold City Brewery’s Lamp Post Ale. He claims it’s only OK, but he certainly didn’t take long to finish it.
00:31:46 – Ryan couldn’t wait any longer so this week’s Trailer Trash Talk gets excited over the conclusion of Nolan’s Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises.
00:45:51 – Everybody knows that cheetahs can outrun greyhounds, but how? A new paper in the Journal of Experimental Biology explores the distinctions by putting them both on a track. SCIENCE!
01:06:10 – PalePOWs are a lot like cheetahs, easy to tame but hard to catch. Kelly has an e-mail from Elio asking why exactly Jeff Goldblum is in Jurassic Park, other than showing off his “sensual chest.” Jacob has an e-mail from Ben H. who, after reading James Gleik’s Chaos and more, has some in-depth questions about chaos, computation, and other heady math stuff. Plus some fractals. Recurring donor Abigail A. sends along a belated missive explaining why as an artist she enjoys the show (as well as the podcast Dame is a Four Letter Word by listener Laurin P.) and her own efforts to spread the love of phenology locally.

Thanks for including my Doubtful News story in your show. I’m glad I found your podcast. It sounds like a subject area I’m very much interested it. As a matter of fact, I write about it quite frequently on the site for the Center for Skeptical Inquiry. My column is called Sounds Sciencey. http://www.csicop.org/specialarticles/archive/category/sounds_sciencey
Hey Paleo-Pals,
I feel like I need to throw my 2 cents in for Christians that don’t reject science.
I myself am a creationist Christian who does not reject physics, biology, or any sort of science. There are many like me that believe that Science is real and a proper pursuit of truth and hold a theistic belief.
I’d appreciate it if in the future you’d allow for the fact that there are Christians, there are Scientists, and there are people who cling to incorrect beliefs despite evidence to the contrary. No two of the three groups are mutually inclusive or exclusive.
While there is a vocal minority are “anti-science” they do not reflect the majority.
That said, keep up the good work. I’m a big fan of the show and appreciate the weekly dose of science and the multitude of quality beers you’ve pointed me towards.

PS (sorry for the double)
I did appreciate the qualification made, I was trying to say “lets call them young earth creationists instead of Christians” not that you were hating on Christians.
Thanks again from your theistic fan
Ah, I appreciate the clarification, because I felt like we did a pretty good job of specifying the group we were talking about and using the term creationist in lieu of Christian. So thanks for clearing that up.
hey, I’ve got a couple comments,
and I’m going to make them on the new message board!

The staff at Animal Ark in Reno, Nevada (http://www.animalark.org/) exercises their Cheetahs daily by letting them run outside their enclosure along a lure coursing track. Several times a year, they let the public attend. It is quite amazing to see them run at top speeds right in front of you with just a 3-foot fence between you and the animal. We have attended several times – here is a video clip that Discovery Channel Canada shot one time we were there: http://watch.discoverychannel.ca/clip445496#clip445496.
The Cheetahs love it, and the vigorous exercise has been proven to extend their life expectancy in captivity substantially – imagine that!
