About Ryan

Ryan swinging

Ryan, the youngest member of the Paleopals, infuses the trio with a verve and energy never before seen in the world of academia. He is the self appointed King Genius of Science Town, a twitter-based revolution founded on scientific thought and imaginary nation-state dynamics. Recently Ryan became a volunteer for the Science and Entertainment Exchange, a division of the NAS tasked with connecting entertainers to good scientists to improve public perception and media portrayal of science. It’s pretty awesome and Ryan is excited about it. Ryan runs and maintains the website goingtrain.com, a platform where he espouses his love of comics, art and just about anything not regulated by the whims of the other Paleopals. He can often be found drinking delicious beers with friends when he’s not maintaining his internet footprint, mountain biking somewhere awesome or doing science.

Ryan’s Winter Solstice Shopping Guide:

Need a gift for the geek in your life? Look no farther, we’ve got you covered.

Feel like listening to some science that’s a little more lyrically inclined? Try the album “Here Comes Science” from They Might Be Giants. It’s technically for kids, but I know I enjoy it. Guess I”m still a child at heart.

Do you have a nerdy friend who thinks they need to defend against zombies? It’s ok to be prepared, but why not give them a crossbow to help with the defense? It’s not a great weapon for fighting the undead but you can’t buy actual guns on Amazon, I checked. So start them off with this medieval beauty.

Of course, we all like the show so wouldn’t it be great if all your friends listened too? Then you could discuss our discussions! Get them an ipod, but take it out of the box first and load it full of Science… sort of episode for the receiver to enjoy.

Wanna sound as good as we sound? This is the beautiful microphone I use. I could just talk to it all day long…

And finally, as the comic book nerd I think it’s important that I promote some cool graphic literature. I’ll leave the capes and tights for another time and simply provide some good sci-fi/fantasy fun for both the novice and veteran comic fan.

Fables – Fairy-tale folk stuck in a modern world. If you ever wanted to see a crossover where Snow White debates policy with the Big Bad Wolf, then this is the book for you. Even if you didn’t want that, this is still the book for you.

North World – It’s set in our world, if our world also included everything from the World of Warcraft. Then again, it’s set in Canada, maybe that’s what Canada is really like. Who knows? They don’t have internet and I don’t check my snail mail that often. Communication is hard.

The Surrogates – Really compelling sci-fi detective story. I wrote a spoiler-free review of it on my other site The Going Train.
