  • Why were Dinosaurs so big?
The largest land dino was 5 times the size of an elephant. The largest pteradon was 5-10 times the size of the largest bird capable of flight today. In contrast, the blue whale is the largest animal ever and is alive today. Why? Any thoughts?

  • Babbletrish says:

Well, the thing is most dinosaurs, like most mammals, weren’t -and aren’t- “so big”. The biggest specimens get a lot of attention but they are also exceedingly rare. The vast majority of dinosaur genre were a bit bigger than buffalo or elands; “medium sized” dinosaurs were likely larger than what we’d call a medium-sized mammal thanks to the differences in their internal anatomy.

And obligatory Pteronodon wasn’t a dinosaur, but the same principles apply.
